This photograph is a mystery to me. I walked into my living room one afternoon and was immediately attracted by this shadow on the wall. I picked up my camera and took three shots of it, then went on about my business. It wasn’t until I reviewed the images that the mystery occurred to me.
Where did that light come from?
This pottery jar of dried California buckwheat has been sitting in this spot on my mantel since fall. My fireplace spans a corner of the living room and is the one spot in the room that receives no direct light at all. Ever. The only explanation I can think of is that the afternoon sun must have bounced off my car in the driveway and reflected through the window and into the corner. But I’ve never seen it before or since, and when I peer through the window from the outside, I can’t even see the mantel.
So there you go. There is a perfectly rational explanation — probably. But the point is that I don’t need an explanation. I like the mystery of it. This photo reminds me that there are things in this world that don’t have easy or pat explanations. There are many things I don’t understand or have the answers to. That’s okay. I don’t need to have all the answers.
I just want to be ready to catch the light when it comes.

Yes! To be there to catch the light.. the very essence of photography. I understand why this is your photo heart connection. The textures, the light and shadows, all make for a very artistic image.

Neato! I vote for ghostly visitation. But then I would. Send them into the light! Or just over to my house! It’s a dead man’s party over here. š

This is a beautiful image , with pretty shadows to give it emphasis. I love that there is mystery in our world, and explanations are not necessary. Whatever caused the light, you were there to catch it. Well done!

Wow – I got chills reading that! It’s a beautiful, well balanced photo, but the mystery of the light makes it something even more special.

Maybe I sent you a little sunshine ; )
Love the image, the shadows, and of course the light. I was thinking the sun might be performing diffently as the seasons shift, but sounds like it was just a special occurance. Very nice contrasts here. Yum.

An amazing miracle of light – and you were there to capture it. How mysteriously lovely. I like your thoughts about not needing to have all the answers – of accepting uncertainty. Definitely something I need to work on. Thank you for this beautiful reminder of the tiny wonders of our world.

I love the shadows created by the mysterious light. So lovely not knowing the cause and just accepting the situation as it is!

I love the mystery too! There is something magical about just holding something special, caught like this. That you were there, you noticed, you captured that beautiful light and shadow is enough. Thank you for sharing in the Photo-Heart Connection. And I echo Cathy- I love the header – it caught my eye first thing!

Do you find yourself glancing that direction to see whether the mystery light has returned? You may even want to mark the date you took this photo on your calendar because it could be a circumstance of the angle of the sunlight, etc., that might happen “the same time next year.” Or it might remain a mystery forever…
